Cottage Museum

Embark on a journey through John Clare’s childhood home.  The cottage has been restored, using traditional building methods, to create a centre where people can learn about John Clare, his works, how rural people lived in the early 19th century and also gain an understanding of the environment.

The Cottage contains examples of his work together with information about his life. Some of the rooms have been returned to the style that would have been found in cottages in the early 19th century in rural England.

Gardens

Split between a traditional cottage garden and a former orchard, this small garden is alive with colour and wildlife all year round.

The cottage garden contains wildflowers, a selection of herbs, and fruit and vegetable areas.

The lower garden was originally an orchard, and some of the older fruit trees are still growing there. The current design is based on the John Clare inspired, Gold Medal winning design by Adam Frost. Parts of the hard landscaping were transferred from Chelsea and installed here in 2013, Adam then provided advice as to the planting of the borders.

All of the gardens are maintained by an enthusiastic group of volunteers.
